Beach Maternity Shoot with Jessica in Tampa, Florida
I would like to share with you a maternity shoot I did a little while back in Tampa, Florida.
I was SO excited to do this because she is… Drum roll please… My sister in law! She lives just outside of Tampa, which is where I shoot most of the time, but we traveled an hour or so for this gorgeous beach. ♥
Her name is Jessica. She is a 23 years old homemaker for her husband and (now 3) girls.
I have known here for around 9 years now. I love shooting family so much!
These pictures were taken at Indian Rocks Beach, Florida (just outside of Tampa) in April of 2015.
Keep reading for the resulting pictures, tips on achieving similar results and some bonus pictures…
This dress was AWESOME to shoot! It was a SUPER windy day, and when life hands you lemons… well, you know! (TIP: if you are shooting with wind and want to get just the right movement, focus/frame the shot and have your model hold still. Wait for the gust of wind and press shutter. You should be able to freeze the movement as it happens while you are ready to take the shot)
The “spotlight” was added in post production using Photoshop presets.
Also, these were NOT taken with a DSLR. You can still get some pretty good images with a lower-end point and shoot.

This was one of those accidental shots that she wasn’t quite posing for, and I was sorta testing out my settings. I ended up loving how it came out so I decided to feature it!
Living in Florida (I was born at Tampa General!) has taught me many things (one being that I DESPISE mosquitoes.) One of them is that it is BRIGHT outside. Jessica and John were such troopers! In order to keep the sky from getting way over-blown-out, I edited the sky in Lightroom, mainly focusing on the COLOR of the sky. It was an overcast day (on and off) so I also tried to take advantage of the bright light for shots like this so I didn’t have a boring, grey sky in the background.
Again, another unplanned shot. They were actually just resting in between poses and looked super comfy so I told them to hold still 🙂
I love the “leading lines” in this shot. I feel like the stairs draw you in to their face nice and tight, while their bare feet spread wide out at the widest part of the staircase (from this perspective) gives the beachy, relaxed feel we were going for with this shoot.
I asked if it bothered them that his skin tone was two different colors (full body farmers tan!) and I am willing to make bigger adjustments to images if the client requests, but they are fine with it, and so am I!
Surprisingly, dad had SUCH a hard time making a hand-heart. It was hilarious! I literally had to help him with my left hand, while my right hand held my camera up in the air (much away from any view I could possibly have) I took several pictures using this angle and loved the way this one came out!
For this image, I wanted to give Jessica some bonus pictures that changed the color of the dress (pink was unavailable when she purchased and she was pregnant with a girl.) She had NO IDEA this was possible and loved the rainbow fantasy effect. Her poor feet were burning the whole time so we had to be quick about this one!
I ate sand for this shot.
There, I said it.
Again, playing with color. I wanted to change the dress to a more teal-blue to match the tons of the grass, the lighting at the time, and the building you can see in the background. Her hair also pops more with this green-blue color
For this shot, she really wanted a more seated position, without completely sitting down but the location was not ideal. I ended up LOVING how this one came out minus the background, so instead of erasing what was behind her, I decided to maker her POP OUT of the frame.
Behind The Scenes
You can’t tell from the pictures, but there were a CRAP-TON of people at the beach on this particular day (Welcome to Florida.) We constantly had to keep moving and people kept walking/swimming/running into the frame. On top of that, most of the time I spent editing (besides controlling blown-out skies) was spent cloning little heads and bodies out of the background. I like to add this picture to give an idea of just how many people were around. Talk about nerves for the poor couple.
Let’s Make A Day Of It….
Here is Aidan keeping himself busy by building me a sand castle before I started shooting.
Hey, I am allowed to have fun, too! 🙂 That is a bonus of shooting family.. You can work, then play!
Look at how much fun he is having in the waves! 🙂
I hope you enjoyed the shots I got from this oh-so-fun beach shoot in Tampa, the BEST beach in the country! 🙂
In case you were wondering, I shot these with my Sony Cybershot DSC-HX200V.
