I’m not sure if it’s just me (although I’m *pretty* sure it’s not…) but the past week has been a yucky combination of suffocation and struggle. Sometimes, the overwhelm of the “day-to-day” has me clawing for a family adventure because
- The bills are always piling.
- The weather has been super yucky.
- My day job is super slow during the summer.
- A 3-day migraine.
What started as an innocent trip to the park for some fresh air (and, if I’m honest, to pick up my camera that I have been neglecting for longer than I care to admit) turned into a wonderful memory that I will always cherish.
Monkey (aka Aidan for those of you who are new here) made a beeline for the swings, of coarse. But true to nature, I had to have a picture first before he got all sweaty. Luckily, the park happened to have a “photo op” station. Yay!
Naturally, I captured some silly faces.
Swinging is his absolute favorite thing to do at the Park! I think it has something to do with the freedom he feels when he gets to fly high, but also that he feels very grounded while swinging, unlike most airborne experiences.

I almost got kicked square in the face!
Passing swing-duty over to hubby, I walked around to take some photos.
I have this cup that I got for Mother’s Day that I used to play around with low angles. I actually love the photos I got!
Not wanting to go too far from the boys in case they needed me, I headed back.
Here is what I caught as I peeked around the tree…
The bond between these two is just absolutely indescribable. I began to really perk up, totally re-energized by their excitement, as well as from the laughs of the children running around the playground.
I jumped on the swings, as the child I am, and snapped some more photos. (Boredom still lingering around.)
Yep, that’s my shoe. Nothing fancy.
“Hey there Monkey!”
By now, hubby wanted to take some pictures so I passed the camera off to him and we kept swinging a little bit longer.
Once the excitement of the swings faded, Monkey wanted to go down some slides.
However, the temperature was a trillion and 5 degrees. The slides were just too hot to go down. We took a couple mommy & son pictures and moseyed on over to the water.
I actually had to hold him here or he probably would have fallen. We were pretty high up on this “tree platform.”
Aidan just loved the birds down by the water! Any chance we get to expose him to wildlife is a WIN in my book!
As we headed back, there was a lonely park bench that I absolutely fell in love with.
As well as a windy curve… Where does it lead?
The walk back to the car seemed to take longer than the entire adventure. (Notice the cherry-red face. That’s my boy!)
Until I was stopped in my tracks by this sign.
Because the WHOLE REASON to come out in the first place was to get away from the “hustle and bustle.”
To reconnect as a family and to reclaim a bit of our sanity on our family adventure.
This innocent little word written in chalk by a stranger was EXACTLY what I came here for.
This whole time, even while ON our adventure, the only story I had been telling myself was “It’s just Tuesday.” and “on to the next item of the agenda…”
But it’s NOT “just Tuesday.”
I have the ability to change the story. I have the ability to change what I am telling myself and literally write my OWN truth.
Here is what I am grateful for on this special day:
- I have access to a beautiful park less than a mile from my home.
- On a hot day, we are blessed to have working AC in our vehicle to run to.
- We are healthy enough to run around with Monkey.
- The ability to “run away” even if only for a few moments.
So while you may feel trapped and caught up in the day-to-day, remember that there is ALWAYS something you could be worrying and stressing about. But, slowing down for a little bit and really focusing on what is actually important so that you never take anything for granted.
In the end, sometimes all we need is a little reminder of what truly matters… Family.
What are you grateful for? I would love to hear about it in the comments below!
